Stand-alone book, SF. Strange, as what I had read of Modesitt till now had always been a series of at least three books.
Basically, this is about two empires battling it out and slowly bleeding each other dry. The adversaries are called the revs, the followers of the revelations of the prophet. That turns out to be a a merger between the neo-muslims and the mormons. Well, yeah, both had prophets, so... Nicely found.
The main character starts out at a border guardpost, on the recieving end of the conflict. Slowly he climbs in rank through the military, all the while trying to sort out loose personal ends, trying to figure out the generic situation and getting dragged in deeper and deeper.
The solution at the end is nicely thought out, but I won't turn this into a spoiler. Go read it yourself, it is just one book :-)
